Whenever people say, "We're living in a highly sophisticated program that's being operated by a super-intellect that created it all," my mind immediately goes, "Um, ok. But isn't that exactly what all religions teach?"
You call that a simulation, I call that, "God created physical reality."
It really isn't that much of a subversive worldview, actually. The whole idea of "forces operating outside the laws of our physical universe" just boils down to "supernatural." That's what the word "supernatural" means--"beyond natural." All we're doing is finally thinking of these ideas in a rational, scientifically-based way. It doesn't destroy the idea of religion--it just explains its concepts using updated words.
So yeah, as a Christian, I can get behind the idea of a Master Programmer! Sounds great to me!
P.S. Totally unrelated, but to me, it appears that consciousness is the only thing in the universe that simply cannot be explained through natural laws. For example, if a blind scientist studied the color RED all her life, she'd be able to learn the color's wavelength, it's basic physical properties, and even its use as symbolism in works of fiction. But would she know what red looked like? Nope.
So it seems to me, if we're going to find out what created our natural world, we've got to look for things that supersede nature. And since conscious minds are the only options on the table, wouldn't it make sense to say that consciousness is the fundamental reality--the "Uncaused First Cause"? If so, then you have a super-intelligent Mind creating everything at the start.
(okay, maybe that was related to my main post just a little)

I think I can answer some questions about being in a simulation. If we were a conscious society that live forever, then playing what we would consider as a computer game simulation might be a qreat way to pass some time away. I would think some of the rules to the game are #1 you start out in the game as a microbe then work your way up the tree of life. #2 The actions you take, the decisions you make is how you climb to a more complex organism. #3 The winner is judged not on who has the most toys, but who can go thru the entire game causing the least amount of harm. What do you think? want to play the game. lol

The ideas of our universe, our reality not being "real" have been thrown around for centuries. A holographic universe, computer simulation-there is a myriad of theories of what our existence actually is part of. While the video I just watched mostly deals with hypotheticals and sometimes subverts into science-fiction, I also think it can be considered a metaphor for some other viewpoints not expressed in the video explicitly. Interestingly enough, my main takeaway from the video was about how to apply the core ideas to our everyday life. Since our reality depends on our perception of it, we can change aspects of our lives by simply changing our attitude towards them. Understandably so, one cannot simply disregard global issues such as climate change by not thinking about them, nonetheless, an individual can drastically change their life by appreciating the positive aspects more, and paying less attention to the negative parts of it. After all, if none of this is real, there is no point in an everlasting struggle, isn't it?

Simulation theories are often criticized by saying you can't simulate the universe with a computer smaller than the universe. But if this is a simulation, why should we assume the "real" world is the same size as ours? What if the real world is billions of times larger and more complex than ours? We would essentially be in a simplified and dumbed down version of reality. Or our simulation may have zero likeness to the real world, the way Mario Bros is only very superficially related to our reality.

  • Dabot

I've had this creepy theory about lag being so similar to gravity.
You know how gravity is just spacetime being distorted right? And thats caused by mass. Large mass objects slow time around them.
Isn't that very similar to how in a virtual environment (videogames for example) having large amounts of objects, like when you spawn 1000 cheese wheels in Skyrim or amping up the render distance in Minecraft, tend to create lag so the simulation runs slowers to process those huge amounts of data?
Well the way I see it, time running slower on large mass objects in our universe sounds awfuly familiar to lag in a simulation.
    Isn't that creepy?

Well it does kind of make sense with the speed of light being max speed and being the basis for a lot of the laws of physics. It means that there is like a world border, technically you can go past it, but by the time you do, the universe is dead. If you do go past max speed, then the laws of physics are violated, and the simulation crashes.

Considering how “real” the dreams, especially vivid, lucid dreams look and feel, I don’t think it is impossible. In dreams we think it is real and find no issues with the logic and reasoning until we wake up and say “that was weird”. A human brain can simulate all of those scenes, textures, emotions, taste, smell, and even more details in dreams. Computers, processing, power, energy and simulation are just things as we know them. They may be our concepts. And more than maybe much much more is possible that we cannot ever even think about because we are not capable of understanding. Like a bacteria could never even “know” that an entity is looking at it with a tool. Think of the scale of differences between a human and a bacteria but put the human in the bacteria’s place.

The concept of a simulation really gives me a lot of comfort because it kind of sparks my imagination and implies that there is still hope even if the universe perishes.
I understand that the concept could be unsettling to some, nonetheless, in my opinion, it is easier to live implying an existence of a simple explanation for the universe. There are some things that could indicate our universe being a simulation, however, I think, during our lifetime we will not find out whether it is true or not.

As soon as we have discovered atoms as the smallest element that makes up all the matter we know of, then it is quite a strong indication that we likely are indeed living in a simulated environment, in which its computational power seems to have an upper limit.

  • Stromko
    Stromko Mês atrás +1

I think it's a strange leap when they talk about the machine needing to simulate all of conscious history at once, just so "they" can skip around in the timeline. There's no point in that, that's not how most simulations we know of function. All you'd need is a 100% deterministic system so you can skip around in the timeline as much as you like while only needing to simulate one instant of time at once, and then the computing power you'd need is many orders of magnitude less. If a recording to 'scrub' through was really necessary it would be drastically easier to just preserve a surface-level recording that simpler devices could access and skim through.
I actually don't put stock in simulation theory, though. I think it's another attempt to ascribe meaning and intention to this existence, albeit in a rational and 'scientific' way, but in all my years it seems like existence is best explained as complete happenstance with no intention or meaning behind it except that which we decide to apply to it. Nothing that's ever happened on Earth would be even passingly interesting let alone educational to a society so advanced that they could simulate Earth.

There's so many wrong assumptions in this video. Every calculation is based on that the simulation is running in real-time. You don't need 3e+40 per second if it takes the simulator a year to simulate one second. Kinda like how a 3D-rendering application will spend a lot more time rendering a video than it takes to play the final video. Also, what if time is entirely simulated? Maybe it's "rendered" in "real-time", but lagging a lot, we wouldn't know. Or maybe time doesn't really exist like this. Or maybe the "real world" is 7-dimension, and we're a mere 3D-program, much like how we make 2D-games.
Obviously I don't believe any of this. I feel like if you actually start to believe that we're a simulation and "not real", people would start to think that there's no reason to be alive.

I'd argue that the thing about whether we're in a simulation is more just... there are SO many things that need simulating in a full universe that it seems like the sheer amount of space it would take up would be incomprehensible.
Like the modern perception of evolution, Several million calculations of seemingly random changes that can do literally nothing, make things worse, or even somehow by random chance make a creature function better? Simulating that on the complete scale of all human life would probably require SO MUCH DATA that even the most compact micro-super-computers that science fiction authors can dream up would be inadequate to track it all.
Edit: Like obviously technological advancement won't stop any time soon, but I'm not sure if we'll really be able to get to that point, especially with the amount of resources it would take (Heck, that one hypothetical megastructure needed the whole power of a STAR to function.)

The thing is, if it's a simulation, it could be anything that they want. For example, the real universe could be nothing like ours, different nature laws, different civilizations, other universe structure. It could literally don't have stars or space tissue. We just wouldn't know.
Hence, the concepts showed in the video can't be applied to prove or not if this is a simulation.

I think the assertion that we have a very high chance of being in a simulation is unsound
In order for the deduction to be correct, all five assumptions must be correct; but if any assumption is wrong, then the chances are low to zero
Since none of the assumptions can be proven or disproven as yet, we are not able to definitively show that the chance that we are in a simulation is large or small
Instead, we can only confidently determine that the odds that we are in a simulation is presently indeterminable, but probable if all five postulates are correct
As I understood the claim about the likelihood of living in a simulation by the guy at the end of the video, he is of the position that we have a high chance of being in a simulation period. But since the odds that the assumptions are correct cannot be presently determined; making the claim without the caveat that the assumptions must be true for the claim to work, and that the odds of correctness is cannot be meaningfully assessed; his claim of likelihood is unsound
Are we living in a situation? Maybe, but only "maybe" in the sense that we cannot gauge the weight of the argument in either direction

The lagging of simulation when we perform too many computations is a non-issue. Since we are part of the simulation, we'll lag/slow down with it too. The only reference of time we have is of this Universe, and if the entire Universe slows down, we being part of it also will, and thus won't feel any slowing down/lag whatsoever.
The only ones who can see the slow down are those who have a reference of time outside of the simulation, they'll see it slowing down.
Thus we can perform as much computations as we want and slow the Universe down, but we won't feel the slowness/lag because we being programs of the simulation, will also slow down with it.

the first thing was mind blowing for me because i was thinking about how we cannot explore other galaxies, at least at the moment, and what if those galaxies are the same as ours. the few planets that have been discovered are said to be very similar to earth, so what if they are? And what if they're wondering the same things that we are? But cannot get the answers because technically the answers do not exist. Or even going back to the fact that the universe looks like a human brain cell, our brains are powered by electricity, and the big bang theory could just be turning on a switch or plugging in a computer. Everything that most humans know is what we are told. we didn't live in those time periods to actually know the truth. We are all given history books and we learn about the past through them. Like everything we need to know pretty much is told to us during school and we choose whether to learn more or to just live with what we know. I think that people who dont have the ability to make choices for themselves and, even if they are miserable, will continue to live through that misery because they are simulated and have no power over their life path.

Alot of the arguments assume that whoever is running these simulations is living in a universe similar to ours. Imagine if 16-bit Mario from super Mario bros was sentient and he were trying to figure out what it would take to simulate his universe by looking at the environment around him and thinking how impossible it must be to simulate that with the objects he sees around him. We could be analogous to Mario for whatever entity is simulating this universe

  • Robert Maoz Kržišnik

I see a couple of misleading assumptions here:
    - that we are being simulated by "others". In my experience, we are the conscious agents playing avatars of ourselves. Like in a multiplayer games you create an avatar and this avatar is then projection of you into that "universe", played by you. So, in my experience, we are the players.
    - all the calculations about the possibility of a civilisation reaching the point in which it can create such a simulation, are computed on the basis of this simulation that we perceive as our universe, with given laws of physics... Actually, we have no idea whatsoever what is the bigger reality outside this simulation, as our simulated minds cannot possibly comprehend it.

  • Andrew Lewis
    Andrew Lewis 4 meses atrás

Really prompts some interesting thoughts. With point #1 that consciousness can be simulated.. well if there's no evidence that the consciousness we currently experience isn't simulated.. then this consciousness might as well be the "real one" because the frame of reference is arbitrary. What is the standard of "real" vs "simulated"? These are just manmade words defined arbitrarily. However, the person you are and become each day (spiritually, mentally, consciously) is undeniably real, or at least the most "real" think knowable. If all of conscious experience occurs from a complex "code", vs. "physically exists" and we encounter it, I'm not sure I really see the difference given the reality of the self. This is honestly a very spiritual/ religious concept, which is neat.

just remember that it doesn't matter how much processing power we would need to simulate the entire population of the Earth in order to be in a simulation. Similar to not simulating every particle in the universe, the scope of the total number of conscious players is probably outnumbered by the non-conscious ones. In fact the only truly conscious player in the simulation any of us could be sure of is ourselves. So in other words, I might be the only simulated consciousness within the simulation. If such a simulation exists.

If this is the case, then whoëver is running the simulation will only need to simulate one consciousness- mine

There was a very strange feature in this case, strange because of its extremely rare occurrence. This man had once been brought to the scaffold in company with several others, and had had the sentence of death by shooting passed upon him for some political crime. Twenty minutes later he had been reprieved and some other punishment substituted; but the interval between the two sentences, twenty minutes, or at least a quarter of an hour, had been passed in the certainty that within a few minutes he must die. I was very anxious to hear him speak of his impressions during that dreadful time, and I several times inquired of him as to what he thought and felt. He remembered everything with the most accurate and extraordinary distinctness, and declared that he would never forget a single iota of the experience. ‘About twenty paces from the scaffold, where he had stood to hear the sentence, were three posts, fixed in the ground, to which to fasten the criminals (of whom there were several). The first three criminals were taken to the posts, dressed in long white tunics, with white caps drawn over their faces, so that they could not see the rifles pointed at them. Then a group of soldiers took their stand opposite to each post. My friend was the eighth on the list, and therefore he would have been among the third lot to go up. A priest went about among them with a cross: and there was about five minutes of time left for him to live. ‘He said that those five minutes seemed to him to be a most interminable period, an enormous wealth of time; he seemed to be living, in these minutes, so many lives that there was no need as yet to think of that last moment, so that he made several arrangements, dividing up the time into portions-one for saying farewell to his companions, two minutes for that; then a couple more for thinking over his own life and career and all about himself; and another minute for a last look around. He remembered having divided his time like this quite well. While saying good- bye to his friends he recollected asking one of them some very usual everyday question, and being much interested in the answer. Then having bade farewell, he embarked upon those two minutes which he had allotted to looking into himself; he knew beforehand what he was going to think about. He wished to put it to himself as quickly and clearly as possible, that here was he, a living, thinking man, and that in three minutes he would be nobody; or if somebody or something, then what and where? He thought he would decide this question once
for all in these last three minutes. A little way off there stood a church, and its gilded spire glittered in the sun. He remembered staring stubbornly at this spire, and at the rays of light sparkling from it. He could not tear his eyes from these rays of light; he got the idea that these rays were his new nature, and that in three minutes he would become one of them, amalgamated somehow with them. ‘The repugnance to what must ensue almost immediately, and the uncertainty, were dreadful, he said; but worst of all was the idea, ‘What should I do if I were not to die now? What if I were to return to life again? What an eternity of days, and all mine! How I should grudge and count up every minute of it, so as to waste not a single instant!’ He said that this thought weighed so upon him and became such a terrible burden upon his brain that he could not bear it, and wished they would shoot him quickly and have done with it.’¹

A person in pre-computer era could say that doing trillions complex calculations is impossible since it would take more time than the existence of the universe - and now we see it's possible.
Dyson spheres? Also naive... it's like ancient people would have imagined producing a lot of energy by making a huge pile of wood and burning it :)
