The Last Human - A Glimpse Into The Far Future

  • Publicado em 27 Jun 2022
  • Because of the potential size of the future, the most important thing about our actions today might be their impact on future generations. This simple-sounding idea has some surprising moral implications: 80000hours.org/kurzgesagt-las...

The future of humanity seems insecure. Rapid climate change, political division, our greed and failings make it hard to look at our species with a lot of optimism and so many people think our end is in sight. But humans always thought they lived in the end times. Every generation assumes they’re important enough to witness the apocalypse and then life just goes on.
This is a problem because it leads to short term thinking and prevents us from creating the best world for ourselves and our descendants. What makes this worse is that we actually may live at an extremely critical moment in human history. To understand why, let us look at the temporal window of humanity and ask:
When will the last human be born and how many people will there ever be?

@Nope It'll be pretty cool, people who have mental breakdowns will be able to peace their lives back together, bit by bit, using every ill conceived 2am tweet they ever sent ! On a more serious note the Sumerian's were documenting their lives in pretty good detail from about 4000 BCE.

I just made it a few magnitudes more positive ;d
Imagine how the Universe is actually very young and after all the big stars die out, the small ones will continue existing for tens or hundreds of times longer and such.. Now think about how life on Earth appeared billions of years ago, and we have strong reasons to believe that ALL life on Earth is connected and probably is related to a single living creature, that appeared at some time, somewhere, in an ocean. At that time, Earth was empty, devoid of life, and just in that one spot a "miracle" happened - the first EVER living things on the whole planet. And at the same time they were so small, you couldn't even see them..
Now look at us, 3.7 billion years later, on a planet covered with life, with so much diversity and so many species lost forever.. asking ourselves "Are we alone? Is there life on another planets?"
Well, what if we are, we do survive, we do become interplanetary species, and we become that first place in the entire universe that created live.. maybe in a billion years from now (or a few billion, it doesn't matter) a great part of the universe will be filled with life, some intelligent, some not so much, but EVERY SINGLE living creature in the whole universe will be connected and will search for their origin, just like we are searching for the origin of life on Earth right now. They will be searching.. for us o.O

@Dingus Doofus This video downplays every negative by saying "it'll be bad, but we'll advance and that will save us." It assumes that we'll tackle every challenge by advancing technologically. Climate migration is already becoming an issue and the only real progress we've made is with computing power and medicine. People still struggle to live in undeveloped countries.
It's important to see that, not as undeveloped countries not being advanced, but as advanced countries leveraging their suffering for their benefit. This means that the prosperity of advanced nations is already unsustainable. I don't think humans are inherently evil or destructive, I just think they're shortsighted and take the easy way out. They're happy to believe a convenient fairy tale

    • Dingus Doofus
      Dingus Doofus Mês atrás +1

@SpinningSideKick9000 It doesn't posit anything like that. But you are positing that "our destructive behaviour" is the defining and overshadowing quality of humanity ultimately defining and overriding everything we do. Clearly, that is not a sober view of the world.
Even our worst destructive behaviour, namely global warming, is nowhere near close enough to potentially causing the extinction of humankind and cutting of our development as a species. It probably won't even be much of a bottleneck in the grand scheme of things, even if countermeasures keep developing as slowly as they do. It would make life rather uncomfortable compared to today - but it probably still beats the conditions our stone age ancestors did fine enough with, given their lack of ressources amplifying the difficulty of managing life greatly.
Maybe we just need to endure more hardship to realise it's going to be fine. Life is too easy and sheltered, it makes even simple challenges look scary.

    • Dingus Doofus
      Dingus Doofus Mês atrás +1

@Nathaniel Holmes I guess that is why humanity has been consistently shrinking across the ages from the sheer ammount of destruction overpowering any good we do.

    • SpinningSideKick9000

At the same time, birth rates will very likely slow down over time, and that shouldn't be seen as an issue. The contrary, if anything. It seems to be a natural byproduct of high living standards.
While predicting the future is incredibly difficult, I think the population will stabilise itself soon enough (by which I mean at some point in the next few hundred years).

This is really, really interesting 🤔. This is the first video I've seen by you and it is something I've thought about before but never in the way you just described. I now have a much better outlook towards humanity's future and potential, always thought space expansion was sure to bring about " astronomical human suffering" before.
But I will still pose the moral question that is, should we do it? More humans may equal more progress but that always comes at a cost, weather it be the plants and animals, minerals or water we take there is bound to me more harm caused than good, the success of the human race will come at the cost of everything else, but I hope I'm wrong 🙏 😔

Thanks for the great optimism; it aligns right with mine, which i don't find often. In my mind, too many people get their idea of the current and possible future of things from news sites instead of learning about what actual numbers show is going on and what science is developing. Plus, there are lots of people who have been pushing us forward without being seen in the overall picture of the culture. Thanks to all of them for what they've done and are doing. You're one(?) of them. Very refreshing. Personally, i think the future is hurtling toward us - lots of change, lots to keep up with, but lots of hope. Since i was 15 (in the 1950's) i've believed it was possible i'd get the chance to live as long as i want. Almost there; fingers crossed.

I routinely think about how young the human race really is. We've come a long ways from the stone age, yes. But humans haven't even scratched the surface of an advanced society yet. We are as much a relic living today as we view our ancestors that made tools from wood and stone. I'm very thankful to have experienced life, but I am left melancholic knowing I will miss out on the biggest parts of human evolution, revolution, history, expansion, exploration and the gained knowledge that will be uncovered if our race lives for another million years. In this aspect I'd rather live at the end knowing all that ever was than in the beginning and wondering all that ever could be.

Now I've never worshipped the moon (or much anything else), but I'd say you can just as well take that phrase negatively.
Waking all over someone or something is usually a form of insult. And you can think that what once was revered and holy, no doubt in the past giving many purpose, is now mundane and under the boot of man.
It's what the ancient Greeks would call "hubris."

Believing in God is innate to human nature and it's something deeply rooted whithin himself. And u r beliefs is what will construct u r vision on world. People that believe know that the mission and the spirit of their presence on life, so they wouldn't think a lot about infinite expansion on Universe, but they would content themselves of what they could work on right now and knowing the limits of human being.

      Unoriginal hopium is cringe.
Interplanetary colonisation at any meaningful scale is not possible, to suggest interstellar or intergalactic travel is, is laughable. No matter how advanced tech gets (hint: it won’t be much more than today) it can’t defy scientific laws or create resources out of thin air. Oh but Andromeda will come to us in 2673578533776326 years anyway, this part was particularly hilarious.
The Mass Effect style man made space colonies were a nice touch too, really added to the absurdity of a supposedly scientific channel touting pure science fiction as reality to push a neoliberal agenda. Cool story tho, needs more Dyson spheres. Perhaps the next video can be on the Fermi Paradox (And how we can solve it! Proudly supported by some billionaire philanthropist’s tax avoidance not for profit NGO).

I'm in the Mega Man fandom right now, and I needed something like this. I know that sounds like a silly reason, but the Mega Man series has 7 sagas, all of which take place centuries in the future(except Battle Network and Classic, which are in present times); especially Legends, which takes place at around 7000-9000 AD. The story of the main timeline has robots that, overtime, cause century-long wars and several apocalypses, and at the end completely replace human society. It makes me very anxious, since robots are a thing that are happening in our lives as we speak, and getting more and more advanced, making those futures believable. So, thank you for snapping me out of believing a series about killer robots is just a funny fantasy, since even if I knew that my brain subconsciously didn't get the memo. It's just as you said in the video: Science Fiction often displays the worst case scenario for suspension's sake.

If you've enjoyed this video, I highly recommend The Beginning of Infinity by David Deutsch. He argues vehemently for this exact kind of optimism. We are knowledge creators, and all physically possible transformations can be performed with the requisite knowledge. Optimism is not an attitude, like glass half full, but a fact about the universe. Specifically, although problems are inevitable, they can also be solved! There is no problem blocking our path to this future that cannot be solved in principle. We must lean into progress, creativity, and knowledge creation. Read the book!

@Ryan Flanagan Not really, I'm just afraid that it will happen sooner than it should so I won't be able to achieve what I want in my life. By the way, I also believe in "God" in some form (or whatever we call a higher dimensional entity) but not in the same way as you do. Let's just say I have my own "religion", but I see it more as a possible theory.
Now I also want to ask something. I don't wanna be rude, don't get me wrong, but do you have any proof of the existence of "Hell" or "Heaven" apart from some fancy words? Because I don't rule it out as a possibility, but I'd like some proof of it first. And saying "you accepted it with your heart" and "we can't see it with our eyes, only with our heart" aren't considered evidence, it's just the same belief you told me about earlier. I'm really curious :)

@Nathaniel Holmes we can know God exists because He has revealed Himself by His creation and His Word by without which we cannot know anything justifiably, and by The Bible we have justifications for every key aspect in life. when we look at a building we know there is a builder. the building is evidence of the builder. the same with a painting and a painter. when we look at creation we know there is a Creator God. God has given us a conscience to know right from wrong, we know God's existence intuitively as well as we know right from wrong.

do you think God is happy with you or mad with you, are you doing anything that could be morally wrong in God's eyes or are you a good person?

Quite possibly if things go well then the last people may be at the end of the universe when it dies in cold space. I forgot what it was called but it’s when the stuff in the universe die off and new planets can’t form since everything is spreading away from each other. Bing bang in reverse. Tho there are theories it could come back together as a the Big Crunch and then Big Bang again. Sounds pretty interesting and makes sense since everything cycles.

@Tuna I want to believe all self aware life has souls, but if there is a higher power watching all of this...it's either evil or incapable...the "logic" of nothingness awaits us all...is terrifying as well...
Ultimately I see most religions as harmful rather than productive for society in general. I thought life would get better for everyone on earth as time goes on, but it's really just inflation of same issues.
Long winded short...more life is suffering on this planet than truly getting basic needs met...and in 2022...that's difficult for me to accept.

The whole divine image thing, imagine saying you are a clone of the greatest human to ever live and that literally everyone else is also a clone but that none of you can accomplish a fraction of what the real one could, that's what they were saying basically, to me it just sounds like they didn't even think it through.

It’s exciting to think we’re at the brink of a new phase of civilisation. I won’t live to see it, but if some future human sees this comment in 1,000 years when other planets get colonised, hi from the past!

We've already passed through the veil, we are connected through technology and we're kind of cyborgs with how often we rely on tech.

Thanks for making this and reminding us of this simple fact that we hold the key.
Then again earlier we used to die due to illness now humans are dying due to suicide. We are suffering more from our imagination and past and future.

Also... Have to deeply appreciate the purposeful connection with people, family, and children (new people, afterall). Our struggles today are not about us and our needs, desires, fears, dreams. It is about a future that is so much bigger than ourselves and yet so critical for us to care about here and now.

My mind was used to fill with despair towards the future of humanity, when the thought of one day we will extinct and i eventually will die kicks in, it kills my passion towards my daily life and study, this video made me realized that we human have came this far and their is endless possibilities for us. This enables me to think in a way that i might eventually contribute to the living of those who arent born yet, it kinda outrun my fear towards my own death and i feel like i am ready to study and polish my skills again to be a functioning member the society, i would like to express my biggest thanks to you all. Your videos are definitely inspiring and the world's a better place because of your video!
