Hidden in the microverse all around you, there is a merciless war being fought by the true rulers of this planet, microorganisms. Amoebae, protists, bacteria, archaea and fungi compete for resources and space. And then there are the strange horrors that are viruses, hunting everyone else. Not even being alive, they are the tiniest, most abundant and deadliest beings on earth, killing trillions every day. Not interested in resources, only in living things to take over. Or so we thought.
It turns out that there are giant viruses that blur the line between life and death - and other viruses hunting them.

To be honest, if there happened an extinction so severe that it wipes out all animals and plants, viruses would possibly evolve to become new era ecosystems. It would be easier, cause they already exist and there are more organic resources to take advantage of. 10.000.000 years would be enough for new life to emerge, being second row of simple invertibrates with their own ecosystems. It would be even more interesting if it happened to animals like insects, how would they look after filling all the nishes?

It honestly sounds like the plot of some Sci-Fy movie/story. Its like Life wanted to be its own thing, so Nature gave it the ability to life. But at the same time, the Universe wanted everything to be the same, so it made viruses to make everything return to being very dead. At least, that's my take on viruses and cells.

Firstly, for a long time I just figured that viruses either started as spores (the flat-pack compacted version of a cell used either for extreme survival or as a "seed") that started finding the "ideal" environment to reconstitute in was another cell. Or, possibly a means of quasi-sexual reproduction between microbes, a way to share genes that went way too far. With watching this video I'm thinking it's also possible that they started as nuclei that shed their cell and gained the ability to infiltrate others (the parasite theory). And yes, there are so many virus lineages that it is likely that all of the above could be true. Is it known if any viruses exist that infect mitochondria or other pre-cellular structures that have their own DNA? That would be interesting to find, and if they ignore the rest of the cell while affecting just their target organelle.
And secondly. Fun fact, there was a giant duck, though I'm not sure if it was as large as an elephant. The Demon Duck of (where else) pre-historic Australia.

    • The Mushroom Inside
The Mushroom Inside 7 meses atrás +1

When you look at sexual reproduction as a whole and how gametes work, they are surprisingly similar to how viral infection works except instead of a nonliving protein capsid its a small cell with a dense DNA package, both need to enter a larger cell and both are able to combine their genetic material with its host.
Gametes themselves are strange as they are haploid with only 50% of its require genetic material, being incomplete to function as it currently is unless paried with its corresponding half. Viruses are also "incomplete" in this way though with far less gentic material, which makes you wonder which exactly came first, Viruses due to being "simpler" and more reliant on parasitism that became more complex or gametic-like incomplete cells which over time became simpler due to losing those complex traits over time, perhaps it was convergent and both scenarios came into existence separately yet share the same methods.
Biology is fascinating beyond imagination, it is a mysterious aspect of the universe that seemingly goes against it, refusing to succumb to a lower state of energy via entropy, by maintaining "order" in an otherwise chaotic, unliving existence.

My question is, at what point does the basic building blocks of the universe in the periodic table assemble into complex forms? I'm betting there's a spectrum from light to matter and even the Earth can be considered a living organism just as the whole universe.

"[Are viruses alive or not?]" I'd like to flip the question: Are we alive or not? I'd vote no. Nothing is alive. It's all just the laws of chemistry expressing themselves. "Alive", "conscious", and "sentient" are simply arbitrary labels that we slap on things which we can't (yet) fully predict the behavior of.

My thinking has long been that a virus is approach to life form. More alive than a rock, but less alive than a cell. My hypothesis is that viral forms represent a link between the primordial soup and life capable of reproduction. The fact of the matter is that a viral DNA is also critically important to quite a few species including all mammals. Case in point, the placenta is the result of retroviral DNA that has integrated itself into the Genome of the ancestor of all mammals and then it's descendants learned how to control its genes to its own ends.

Man, That is awesome!!!! I’m a good bit older than you but I had a similar experience. In a world before internet was widespread I came across a article in a newspaper that talked about this guy who had single-handedly created a instant type of “Information Superhighway”. It was a way we could instantly get ANY piece of information we needed basically out of thin air. Because of him I too was inspired to lay down my newspaper and study this great breakthrough science called the”World Wide Web”. Here we are 30 years later and I have several degrees in Information Security and a doctorate in Information Technology. This man was the writer of my entire life story I guess you could say, even though his wife once tried to limit the availability of my favorite genre of music…. She is responsible for the lil labels on music covers “Parental Guidance Strongly Suggested”, but I don’t hold that against him. Just think, If it wasn’t for a man named Al Gore, I would probably be working in microbiology; studying viruses, and all the brightest minds like you would forever be stuck in a endless loop of fast food careers and dead end jobs. Yes Sir, Al Gore’s invention has touched us all in some tiny way I guess…

The whole "is it alive?" Thing seems like such an overblown non-issue. What do people expect to find in it that definitively concludes life or death? A soul? It's just semantics for the word "life". Why can't we just decide on a definition?
Life: a chemical pattern that adjusts itself via natural selection, allowing that pattern to perpetuate itself in a variety of environments. There. Done.
